It Wasn’t the Cross That Made Him Cry

From the sermon “Why Did Jesus Cry?” by Bishop Gregory Newman, we’re reminded that Jesus wasn’t crying because of the cross itself… but because of the separation that came with it.

When Jesus hung on the cross and cried out, it wasn’t fear of death—He had already declared He had power to lay His life down and take it up again. It wasn’t the pain, the nails, or even the shame.

It was the moment of separation.

For the first time, He experienced what it felt like to be disconnected from the Father. The One who had always been in perfect fellowship… now carrying the weight of sin, feeling what we feel.

And that changes how we see everything.

Because many times, we focus on avoiding hard moments—trying to escape pressure, pain, or discomfort. But this message reminds us that the real issue isn’t always what we go through…

It’s what we’re connected to while we’re going through it. You can go through pressure and still have peace. You can face uncertainty and still have trust. You can deal with challenges and still stay grounded in God. Connection changes everything.

Jesus endured the cross not because it was easy… but because it was necessary. He agreed to a temporary separation so we would never have to live separated from God again.

And even in that moment, He looked beyond the pain and saw purpose. He saw restoration. He saw us.
