When Jesus Says, “Come”

Dr. GreGory Wendell reminded us Sunday that the greatest miracle in the story of Peter walking on the water was not simply that Peter took a few steps on the waves. The greater comfort was that Jesus was already coming toward the disciples in their storm.

They were not outside God’s will. Jesus had told them to get into the boat—and a storm still came. That matters because difficult seasons can make us question whether we heard God correctly. We may wonder why life feels so uncertain when we have been praying, obeying, and doing our best to follow Him. But a storm does not always mean we took a wrong turn. Sometimes it becomes the place where we discover that trouble cannot stop Jesus from reaching us.

When Jesus approached the boat, He told Peter, “Come.” That one word invited Peter beyond what was natural, explainable, and controllable. Peter had to decide whether he would remain where he felt safe or trust the One standing above the storm.

God may be saying “come” to us, too.

Come beyond the fear. Come beyond the disappointment. Come beyond what has always been. Come into a deeper level of obedience and faith.

Staying under God’s influence means allowing His Word, presence, promises, and possibilities to speak louder than the storm. It means remembering that Jesus sees us, Jesus is coming toward us, and Jesus can carry us into places we could never reach by ourselves.
